Our Work

When it was first established the Foundation Shekinah worked directly in the streets, establishing friendships and gaining the confidence of the children.  With the passing of time and the changing role of the foundation we established relations with people and institutes interested in our work. Through the generosity of these people and organisations the foundation now has its own building, the Home that we call ¨My Refuge¨, with a capacity for 45 children.  Here we receive children between 0 and 12 years old who have been victims of domestic violence or abandonment or who have been living in the streets of our city, exposed to all manner of dangers.
When a child enters ¨My Refuge¨ we start a multi-phase process with the goal of reinserting the child into his or her family.

Phases of the Process

1. When a boy or girl enters the foundation he or she receives the urgent attention that is required and enters into a process of adaptation and immediate help which is managed jointly by the coordinators of the Home and the psychologist. 
2. Once sufficient information about the parents or family has been obtained from the child or an organisation such as Dinapen, Tribunal of the child and adolescent, etc.; the D.A.F (Department of Family Help) contacts the family in order to begin the process of reintegration.  Unfortunately, for various reasons reintegration into the family is not always possible and for children in this situation we would like to extend the program ¨Permanent Homes.¨  For the time being we maintain contact with organisations that offer an alternative life for these children.
3. Once conditions of security and stability have been re-established in the family home the boy, girl or adolescent begins the process of egression from the foundation.  In some cases the foundation continues to provide economic aid to cover the costs of education.
